2016 Wolf­gang Hahn Prize

For the 22nd year in a row, the Ge­sellschaft für Mod­erne Kunst am Mu­se­um Lud­wig pre­sented the Wolf­gang Hahn Prize. In 2016 the re­cipi­ent was the artist Huang Yong Ping, who was born in 1954 in Chi­na and has lived in Paris since 1989. With this prize, the Ge­sellschaft für Mod­erne Kunst rec­og­nizes the con­sis­tent qual­i­ty of the re­cipi­ents’ work. The as­so­ci­a­tion will ac­quire a key work for the col­lec­tion of the Mu­se­um Lud­wig.

Painting in Space

In this spe­cial an­niver­sary year at the Mu­se­um Lud­wig, the ex­hi­bi­tion Fer­nand Léger: Paint­ing in Spacecasts a new light on one of the most di­verse and in­flu­en­tial artists of mod­er­nism, who sought to achieve a syn­th­e­sis of the arts.
Paint­ing in Space is the first ret­ro­spec­tive that fo­cus­es on Fer­nand Léger’s mu­rals. As an ar­chi­tec­tu­ral drafts­man by train­ing, en­gag­ing with built spaces through paint­ing was a ma­jor con­cern for Léger. His quest to ex­tend paint­ing be­yond the lim­its of the easel and in­te­grate it within so­cial space and ar­chi­tec­ture is il­lus­trat­ed by a num­ber of pro­jects both re­al­ized and un­re­al­ized.

Photographers, Friendships, and the Unique Gruber Collection

In 1977 the L. Fritz and Renate Gruber Collection laid the foundation for the photography collection at the Museum Ludwig. Icons of photographic history from Man Ray, Cecil Beaton, or August Sander offer a panorama of twentieth-century photography. Yet the Gruber Collection is not only unique due to the photographs themselves, but also in light of its genesis. The collection took shape as a result of the collectors’ longtime friendships with the photographers. Here a selection of photographs have been compiled from the collection and the Gruber Archive, which was only recently acquired by the Museum Ludwig. These photographs—in some cases personal mementos—attest to these many encounters and friendships.
In a series of interviews for the Museum Ludwig, Renate Gruber shares her very personal memories of twenty photographers who are now among the most famous of the twentieth century. Excerpts are on view here at the museum, and the complete interviews are available online at

This Late Night Thursday event will be themed around the sunny summer weather. The collection of the Museum Ludwig includes the most important artists of the twentieth century and contemporary art. The reorganization of the collection promises to offer new encounters and views, which you can discover along with our kunst:dialoge team. As always, there are no stupid questions! This is the time to ask what you’ve always wondered about. The evening will also feature the return of our “Come together” event, where you can make new acquaintances and enjoy electronic music by internationally acclaimed DJ Milo McBride.

Stories on Film: Games - Money - Idle Pleasures
Movies tell stories and are also images of history. With the series Stories on Film, since the spring of 2015 the Filmforum has been presenting programs on the history of film in which selected themes are followed over time. After focusing on the themes of games and money last year, now we will explore idleness in film.
